Characters of the Weald

People shaped by quiet places

The Larenweald is a forest that softens voices. Those who live beneath its canopy grow into people who can hear subtle moods in trees, sense when the moss is unsettled, and feel when the whisperfawns are holding their breath. It is a place that shapes its folk slowly and gently, like water wearing a stone smooth.

Most Wealdfolk are steady, kind in unassuming ways, and deeply protective of their routines. They are not dramatic, nor do they consider themselves remarkable — the forest simply asks its people to be attentive, and so they are.

The Denaly family

The Denalys have lived along one of the quieter paths of the Larenweald for generations. Healers, caretakers, listeners. They are known for their reliability, their patience, and the quiet way they keep the forest’s small dramas from becoming large ones.

Clementine Denaly

Soft voiced, easily overlooked, quick witted in sideways ways, and sharper than she ever gives herself credit for. Clementine has lived her whole life inside the familiar rhythm of the Weald — gathering herbs with her father, avoiding crowds, and trying her best to keep her thoughts from spiralling.

She sees whisperfawns more clearly than most elves and feels disturbances in the forest long before others notice them. Though she considers herself ordinary, almost painfully so, her perspective is its own kind of gift.

Tallow Brendyn

A dwarrow with broad shoulders, a gentler heart than he pretends to have, and a talent for fixing anything broken — tools, fences, tempers. Tallow is a steady presence along the Weald paths, known for offering help even when he claims he won’t.

He treats Clementine with an older-sibling warmth, teasing her gently but watching closely when her anxiety curls up too tightly. The forest trusts him, and so do most people who cross his path.

Other Wealdfolk

The Larenweald is full of small, steady lives. Herb gatherers who know which trunks hum at dusk. Path wardens who walk the same loops every morning. Elder elves whose songs keep old memories from thinning. Children who insist whisperfawns understand every word they say.

None of them imagine their forest becoming a place of great importance. The Weald has always been safe, always been quiet. But something under its roots has begun to shift, and the people who call it home will feel that change whether they are ready or not.

The Weald’s place in the story

The characters of the Larenweald hold the emotional foundation beneath Clementine’s journey. They show what calm looks like before calm begins to fail. Their gentleness, routines, and relationships set the contrast for the changes creeping silently toward them.

This page includes only the characters already present in the early chapters. As the story expands and new faces enter Clementine’s life, this entry will grow alongside her — but never ahead of what she knows.
